Week 7-9 Using a nga takepu lens, critique the role of the professional social worker within your placement organization/community
My social work practice begins with rangahau of the whanau before a professionals meeting, what's the crisis? why is there crisis? what are the formal and informal supports in place? what is the financial package available? what is going on with the client and the wider whanau? The gathering of incident reports, current medical reviews, medications and support plans over the past three months. Within my practice I need to place myself in all areas of the clients environment, school, home, community, medical to ensure a wider scope of the current situation.
Social workers in Aotearoa offer advice and support to Whanau and individuals with personal or social issues. Social workers can work with Whanau to simplify language and law, advocate for human rights and also facilitate professional meetings/tasks between client and community services, family group conference (FGC), they also investigate complaints of concern regarding children safety, connecting to government and non government organizations. A big part of a social workers job is to report information and assess risk.
What Social workers do? Professionals meeting this week- Disability
Crisis planning- Discussing with all professionals and Whanau regarding the crisis, child is hitting out hurting whanau, self harm, exposing herself, musterbation (culturally not acceptable), physical abuse/control towards child, due to embarrassment, family burnt out, sleepless nights, a terminal illness of mother, grandparents worried for what will happen to there grandchildren, 2 children in household with high and complex needs. AHURUTANGA (ensuring family are in safe space to discuss issues of concern)
What I learnt this week?
Applying the principles of necessity and proportionality ( what is the immediate need? Collect no more information than what is needed regarding the crisis)
I offered advice and strategies regarding respite for the family, request of consent from family to use there financial supports for a motel so family can have a break and then swap out other family members so they can reset and rest. KAITIAKITANGA (offering guidance, leadership) within the disability sector.
TAU KUMEKUME ( Oranga Tamariki wanting to close off the case, as no concern regarding abuse of a child, no care and protection orders, its clear parents care for there child so need for us to be part of the process, other professionals disagreed) Oranga Tamariki can not offer any financial support, the family wanted a gate way assessment, many professionals were disappointed as they can see that family are in crisis and they have spoken frequently giving there child up because the support is not available for residential respite.
Social Workers roles and present in meeting: Clinical social workers, MOE education Social workers, ADHB Social worker. These social workers challenged OT social worker in regards to signing case off, they were appropriate and showed respect through the discussion, TE WHAKAKOHA RANGTIRATANGA.
KARAKIA- Opening and closing thanking everyone for there time and restoring MAURI ORA
My role I played was planning and organizing providers for support, reconfiguration of funding so supports are utilized in giving the family respite, request of consent to use current funding and approval to use the funding more creatively from the funding team.
My Code of Ethics: Protecting the rights and promote the interests of my client (The daughter in this case)
Excellent reflections on role and functions of a professional social worker. Well done.
