Week 10-12 Using nga takepu lens, reflect on how your praxis has enabled you to demonstrate the 10 SWRB Core Competencies & meet SWRB Fit & Proper Policy
Description: Hospice had made contact with me regarding a mutual client, and that the whanau were needing disability supports put in place. I contacted carer mum to discuss there current situation. Mum had stated differently and that she felt the whanau weren't in crisis. I visited the home to get a better understanding of the living situation and need for the unwell client. Soon after arrival I quickly realized that the carer was supporting her 92 year old mother and daughter with motor neuron disease (MND). She was the full time carer for both family members, mums capacity was stretched to the point of burn out. Mum presented with so much positivity and grace and found it difficult to voice that she was in crisis, as she felt it wasn't right to express her feelings when she had an elderly mother and a daughter that was terminally ill.
By using my Nga Takepu lens and creating a safe place (Ahurutanga) I was able to build rapport with whanau and the needs started to present themselves through whitiwhiti korero. Through Ata Haere I tread lightly, speaking cautiously (Ata korero), and Ata noho( giving quality time), I was able to build a really good understanding of the needs and supports that whanau were needing.
Further in to my assessment it was clear that carer was unaware that she was receiving a funding package to support her with caring for her daughter, further investigation showed that a family member had been claiming the care hours allocated for there own personal gain. Tukemekeme was present, I allowed this to play out for a short time, bringing focus back to the clients needs, reassuring them regardless of the fraud, we would still support and come up with a plan moving forward and they would have to give me time for further discussions with management.
Feelings: My feelings towards the family at this time was of sadness, I felt empathic towards the whanau regarding the financial support that had no been used for there loved one. My determination positioned me to support this whanau in there time of crisis, I had hope and faith that the organization would come up with a suitable plan and offer further financial support.
Evaluation: My assessment process was a strengths based approach which took into consideration tikanga Maori beliefs and values. My approach was person centered, what important to the client and whanau, how can the organization keep the whanau healthy and safe, what are the immediate supports needed to achieve Mauri Ora for the whanau.
Analysis: I needed to take into consideration the investigation and the process and procedures of questioning whanau, with out offence and conflicting further pain onto the family at this delicate time. I needed to approach with asking minimal questions regarding the funds, taking into consideration, confidentiality, consent, and relaying the process of audit. Gathering further information from providers to have evidence based information. I was always mindful of the whanau outcomes well being (Mauri Ora) being in tact after the investigation.
In conclusion I felt I approached the family with a cultural lens, with a non judgmental stance, taking into consideration the most important, need of the client and whanau. Being aware of Maori tikanga beliefs and values and ensuring my Nga takepu lens was present and reset when needed. Ata guided my korero ensuring I moved (Ata Haere) with and wrote diligently (Ata tuhi) acknowledging the consequences peacefully (Ata- hoki marire), (Ata Noho) giving quality time, (Ata mahi) working carefully. I should of offered karakia before leaving to bring the whanau together and create further peace of mind., hope and faith.
Good reflections. Linking these to any one or more of the 10 competencies and how this example demonstrated your competence in a particular standard would have added value.
