Week 1-3 Analyse the theory and model of practice within the placement setting

Within my placement at Taikura Trust (NASC) the theory and model of practice is Enabling Good Lives (EGL).  Its an approach that supports disabled people, to make there own choice and have more control over there lives and Whanau.  They can decide on supports that are more suitable for them and plan the lives they want to live.

The connector case manager when allocating supports and funding need to ensure they are implementing what the client is wanting from there lives, ensuring they guide and offer options along the way if they seem to be struggling with the decision, the Practioner needs to be careful not to push what they believe the person and Whanau need.   The vision of EGL is to make use of natural supports and what is true to the client and Whanau.  The principles based approach will ensure the organization stays on track to progress the vision of the client and Whanau.

The EGL principles will be used in needs assessments and help guide decisions for change within the Whanau and client.  The key characteristics of EGL is that all elements of a client and Whanau lives stay connected to all elements. The objective is to make it easier for the client and family to create good lives that are sustainable.  The EGL team consists of Whanau, disabled people and other disability sector leaders from around Aotearoa.  The EGL funding is pooled by the MOE, MOH and Social development.  The partnership is between the disability sector and government agencies, its aim is to transform Whanau and clients to be supported to live a good quality of life everyday.

My reflective practice is to assess and see the need kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face).  To discuss decisions deeper with Whanau and client to come to an agreement if it is a short or a long term plan.

  1. EGL - very unique model of practice. Simple but significant.
